Swissquote's Financial Setback: A Deeper Dive into 2026 Profit Guidance Cut

In a surprising turn of events, Swissquote, a prominent online bank headquartered in Gland, Switzerland, experienced a significant 10% drop in share value on Thursday. This decline followed the bank's decision to revise its 2026 profit guidance downward. The announcement highlighted the adverse impact of a downturn in cryptocurrency trading revenues, which cast a shadow over the bank's otherwise positive performance metrics, such as record client inflows and the expansion of its Yuh neobanking unit.

The Revised Financial Outlook

Swissquote's revised financial projections for 2026 now anticipate a full-year pre-tax profit of approximately 365 million Swiss francs. This is a decrease from the earlier guidance, which estimated pre-tax profit at around 420 million francs. Additionally, the bank's forecasted net revenue for the same period has been adjusted to 730 million francs.

The primary factor contributing to this downward revision is the substantial decline in the value of most cryptocurrency assets during the first half of 2026. This decline resulted in the bank's net crypto assets income failing to meet initial expectations. Swissquote acknowledged that these adjustments reflect a weaker-than-anticipated crypto environment.

Mid-Year Financial Performance

For the six months ending June 30, 2026, Swissquote reported a net profit of 153.6 million francs, slightly down from 158.2 million francs for the same period in the previous year. Pre-tax profit also saw a slight dip, registering at 182.9 million francs compared to 185.2 million francs in the first half of 2025.

The earnings per share for this period stood at 1.03 francs, a minor decrease from 1.06 francs a year earlier. Similarly, diluted earnings per share were recorded at 1.02 francs, down from 1.05 francs.

Revenue Analysis

Despite these challenges, Swissquote's net revenue for the first half of 2026 exhibited growth, rising to 364.9 million francs from 359.2 million francs in the preceding year, according to interim financial statements. Notably, the company's press conference presentation indicated net revenue of 364.2 million francs for the period, as compared to the second half of 2025.

Within this revenue composition, net fee and commission income declined to 141.5 million francs from 148.7 million francs in the previous year. On the other hand, net interest income increased to 115.9 million francs from 108.1 million francs, and net trading income rose to 107.5 million francs from 102.4 million francs.

Rising Operating Expenses

Swissquote's operating expenses for the first half of 2026 rose to 181.3 million francs from 173.5 million francs the year prior. This increase was mainly due to rising payroll and related expenses, along with heightened depreciation, amortisation, and marketing expenditures.

Segment Performance and Crypto Decline

A deeper dive into Swissquote's segmental income reveals that operating income from securities trading fell to 300.7 million francs from 317.3 million francs in the earlier year. Within this segment, revenue from crypto assets plummeted significantly to 12 million francs from 43 million francs.

Moreover, net fee and commission income associated with crypto asset trading decreased to 17.7 million francs from 39.2 million francs. It is noteworthy that net trading income was affected by a loss of 5.3 million francs from the revaluation of Swissquote's crypto assets inventory, in contrast to a gain of 1.7 million francs in the prior year.

Success in Leveraged Forex and Neobanking

In contrast to the crypto sector, Swissquote witnessed an increase in operating income from leveraged forex, which rose to 46.3 million francs from 41.9 million francs. Additionally, Swissquote's new Neobanking segment, established following the July 2025 acquisition of Yuh, generated operating income of 17.8 million francs, although it did not materially contribute to the bank's operating profit by mid-2026.

Conclusion and Forward-Looking Statements

Swissquote's recent financial performance exemplifies the bank's challenges in navigating volatile market dynamics, especially within the cryptocurrency realm. On the other hand, its success in client inflows, neobanking growth, and forex trading provides a silver lining, indicating resilience and diversified revenue streams.

Going forward, Swissquote's strategic focus should aim at leveraging its strengths while mitigating risks in the crypto domain, to ensure sustainable growth and stakeholder value creation in the evolving financial landscape.
